In December 2014, the MBCA hosted what would become our first Executive Resource Community gathering: a roundtable for Chief Risk Officers.

At the time, the purpose was simple: bring CROs together to connect, share with and learn from one another. No presentations. No vendors. No consultants. No outside speakers.

Just Chief Risk Officers sharing experiences, comparing approaches, discussing challenges, and helping one another navigate a rapidly changing environment as the industry worked through the rulemaking and regulatory requirements stemming from the Dodd-Frank Act.

That gathering ultimately became the model upon which the MBCA was built and has since enabled us to support many of your executive colleagues through similar communities for CFOs, CIOs, CHROs, Chief Credit Officers, Chief Compliance Officers, General Counsel, Internal Auditors, Operations Leaders, and others.

Twelve years later, much has changed. The role of the Chief Risk Officer has expanded significantly. The scope of responsibility is broader. The regulatory environment continues to evolve. Technology, cyber risk, third-party risk, AI, operational resilience, governance, model risk, and enterprise risk management now compete for attention alongside the traditional concerns of credit, liquidity, and capital.

What has not changed is the value of peer exchange.

In many respects, that remains the core mission of this Community and the reason it was created.

Throughout the year, the MBCA supports Chief Risk Officers through surveys, benchmarking, artifacts, office hours, small-group discussions, and virtual meetings. Our in-person Roundtable is intended to serve as the capstone to that work—bringing together leaders from across the country to compare approaches, challenge assumptions, discuss emerging issues, and learn from one another's experiences.

As is our custom, the meeting will be designed to achieve as close to 100% peer-to-peer exchange as possible. The agenda will be informed directly by member input, survey results, and the issues consuming your time and attention today.

Most importantly, we will create space for the conversations that often prove most valuable:

  • What are you trying to solve?
  • What is working?
  • What isn't?
  • What would you do differently if given the chance?

The Chief Risk Officer Community was the first Executive Resource Community we built, and it remains one of the most engaged, thoughtful, and collaborative groups within the MBCA. I am grateful for the role many of you have played in shaping not only this Community, but the broader organization as well.

The goal is simple: leave with at least one practical idea you will take back to your institution and one new peer relationship you will intentionally build upon.

We hope you will join us in Orlando.
